Challenge of Library Material or Programs Policy

The NorthEast-Millerton Library supports the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read and Freedom to View Statements.

Should any patron of the NorthEast-Millerton Library raise a question about any materials provided by the Library being in any way objectionable, the complainant must file a written complaint with the Library Director on a form provided for this purpose.

The complainant must be properly identified as a library patron and resident of our chartered service area before the request is considered.

The Director will notify the patron that their complaint has been received and is under review. The Director shall notify the Board President and keep them updated on the status of the complaint. During review period the Director may:

  1. read and examine the challenged material
  2. consider the specific objections to the material voiced by the complainant
  3. weigh the values and faults of the material as a whole
  4. where appropriate, solicit advice or opinion from other library Directors, the Mid-Hudson Library System, the American Library Association Office for Intellectual Freedom and the New York State Intellectual Freedom Committee.

The Director has ninety days issue a written response to the complainant to notify them of their decision.

If the complaint is not satisfied with the Director’s decision, they may ask to have it reviewed by the by the Library’s Board of Trustees. The Board will consider the objection and the Director’s recommendation. The finial decision shall be issued by the Board within thirty days of the request to review.
